GlobalFoundries expands operations in Malaysia with new hub facility

GlobalFoundries, a player in the semiconductor industry, has launched a hub facility in Malaysia. This initiative is set to generate 300 manufacturing roles, bolstering its already significant presence across Singapore, Europe, and the US.

  • Location is Everything: GF's sleek new office is located in Bayan Lepas, Penang, strategically situated to link with the recently introduced GF Singapore fabrication plant.

  • Behind the Scenes: Kay Chai “KC” Ang, GF's Chief Manufacturing Officer, emphasizes that Malaysia's progressive policies have drawn a plethora of high-skilled talent. This will enable GF to diversify their talent pool dramatically.

  • Aiming High: Malaysia has an ambitious goal of capturing 15% market share in the semiconductor and electronics industry by 2030, a significant increase from their current standing.

  • The Silicon Valley of the East: The facility in Penang is central to their strategy to fortify their reputation as the "Silicon Valley of the East," as stated by the state’s Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow.

GlobalFoundries' semiconductors are found in a wide array of today's hottest gadgets - from smartphones to cars to gaming consoles and smart speakers. With designs by industry giants like Qualcomm, MediaTek, and NXP Semiconductors, GF ranks as the world's third-largest foundry by revenue, closely trailing TSMC and Samsung.
