Lightium Raises €6.2M to Power Data Centers

Swiss photonics startup Lightium has raised €6.2 million in seed funding to revolutionize data centers with cutting-edge photonic chips. As the demand for data skyrockets with AI growth, Lightium aims to boost transmission speeds while reducing energy consumption through its innovative Thin-Film Lithium Niobate (TFLN) technology.

  • Funding Round: Led by Vsquared Ventures and Lakestar, this round fuels Lightium's mission to bring TFLN-based photonic chips to market at scale.

  • Data Center Efficiency: With AI driving exponential data growth, data centers will handle 100x more data by 2030. Lightium’s TFLN chips promise faster data transmission rates (up to 3.2 Tb/s) while slashing power consumption.

  • Breaking Barriers: Traditional semiconductor-based chips have reached their performance limits. Lightium’s chips, designed for mass manufacturing, offer a much-needed alternative for data centers.

  • Environmental Impact: By improving power efficiency, Lightium helps reduce the energy consumption of data centers—currently responsible for 10% of global electricity use.

Lightium is scaling up its manufacturing and launching foundry services by 2025, aiming to revolutionize data centers and drive a more efficient, sustainable digital future.
